World War Z

Great film (the extended cut on blu-ray adds a bit more zombie action which is good) and great fun to watch.  It is not a typical zombie movie, more of an action movie with a zombie theme. Brad Pitt is decent as the main lead (not sure he needs to have long hair though?!) and the film moves along at a good pace. The set pieces (especially the zombies climbing the wall) are good and well done. The one thing that lets it down is the ending which seems to be setting it up for a sequal, that i doubt will happen.

The Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

A much smarter approach to a Zombie film than expected – mixed with genuinely exciting action.  The hugely effective structure moves you from one stunning set piece to another – with enough of a break between to develop the story and give you time to take it all in.  The pacing is spot on.  It is a very well shaken cocktail of 28 Days Later and Contagion – a ‘real-life’ approach – where Z’s spread like a virus.  As long as you accept Pitt is the luckiest man on the planet – this is a film you may want to watch again and again. (The Blu-Ray release includes an extra 8 minutes – mainly extending the gore and horror of scenes chopped for lower certification at the cinema. It does improve the film by making it seem more complete.)

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

The end of the world scenario has been played out many times – but this film got the pacing and set pieces spot on. If you watched it and wondered if how you would respond and fancy an opportunity to put yourself and your colleagues to the test – we aimed for the same structure, intensity and challenge level in our Bunkered event. It requires a careful mix of strategic planning, instant problem solving and risk taking to succeed. Something so well demonstrated by the somewhat overly lucky Pitt in this movie. Unfortunately, there is no luck in our team building day – just skill and judgement.

Iron Man 3

An Ironman film with not a lot of actual Ironman in it!  Trying to be a journey into Tony Stark’s emotional side. My emotion was one of disappointment! And the reveal of the main “baddie” is very naff.

Truffle Shuffler: 2/5

The weakest of the trilogy – edging toward the Dark Knight Rises territory but delivered in a Disney(ish) style and it even has an annoying kid getting involved. It doesn’t have the humour of the others (or Avengers Assemble) and goes over the top with Special FX in the hopes of creating exciting an action spectacle. It doesn’t.

Flight

The first 20 minutes of this film are great; any film that opens with a naked hotshot walking towards the camera has got to have its good points!! And the actual plane crash is fantastic however it then slows down is we dive into Denzel’s spiral of self-destruction which, as ever, is well acted by Mr Washington but does feel very similar to other films that he has done. The end is very clichéd with a happy ending ( sort of) which does feel a bit lazy where they could have been a bit different or brave by ending in a different way. But a solid film and a decent, if a bit long watch.

The Truffle Shuffler: 3/5

Unfortunately – this proves to be an uncomfortable long-haul! The first 20-30 minutes are impressive and the flight in question is superbly filmed. Then it takes a nose dive until the final 10 minutes when it does eventually crash. Washington is slightly against type (not quite the pillar of strength he often plays) which is refreshing to see – and the performances are all good – but it is one of those movies you would stomach as part of your inflight entertainment but be disappointed with on your sofa!

This is the End

Really only need to use two words to describe this film – absolutely awful. But in the spirit of a review I will use a few more. This is a bunch of actors (not all that you would class as particularly well known!) playing an exaggerated version of themselves during the end of the world. This is meant to be funny but it is just annoying and no one’s comes out of this film looking good. The movie feels very self-indulgent with the actors having a way better time than anyone watching it will have!

Zero Dark Thirty

I wasn’t sure I would like this as I hated the Hurt Locker and it is from same person – but I actually liked this. It was interesting and gripping throughout and Jessica Chastain is brilliant as the lead. It is of course very American so very much their side of events. It is slightly too long and does drag a bit in the middle, but stick with it and it is a decent film about a very interesting and historic event.

Star Trek Into Darkness

A big challenge to match the first Star Trek reboot but on the whole they manage it. Great action, decent villain and I personally think Simon Pegg is great as the main comedy relief. Bring on the 3rd instalment of this so far very good franchise.

Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

It starts off at a frantic pace – and maintains it nearly all the way through – but at the expense your involvement and much of the ‘feel good’ humour of JJ’s first Star Trek.  It feels much more of a ‘Star Trek’ movie – but, ironically, that may not be a good thing.  It does entwine themes and characters from the original series and films in interesting ways and is entertaining.  It’s just not as good.

Argo

Even though you know how this film is going to end it is still really good, grips you to the end and is filled with tension. Ben Affleck (the new Batman!!!) is decent as the main man and it is a film worthy of all it’s awards.

Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

Whether you know the outcome of this real-life story or not – the film is acted, directed and edited brilliantly enough to grab your attention and intensify until you are perched on the edge of your seat. I was actually ‘clenching’ at points and it was all due to the power of the story-telling – which doesn’t rely on trickery so commonly seen in movies of this kind. Very entertaining.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

It is the power of the story telling and the engagement with the characters that impressed us. Imaginative, out-of-the-box problem solving is effectively demonstrated. If you liked the feel of this film you would particularly like our Bunkered team building day – as it requires the highest levels of strategic thinking of all – together with the ability to put your ideas into action when time is short. When it comes to the crunch – panic is not an option!
