Welcome to the Punch Review

Many British gangster films feel the same, look the same and end the same.  I would love to say this was different, but it isn’t.  The main problem with this is that you know who the “baddie” is the minute they walk on screen and when it gets towards the end you already know what is going to happen.  Mark Strong plays his normal character and James X-Men is totally mis-cast as the main man, action cop. It’s not an awful film but it is a film you will have seen many times before as there is nothing original in there.

Thor – The Dark World Review

I was looking forward to seeing this film given the recent Avengers mash up and the Iron Man & Captain America’s being very decent supehero movies.  However this was a bit of a let down.  I wasn’t keen on the first Thor film in comparison to the other Marvel films but this one has lost some of the charm and humour of the original. Whilst it is still entertaining and the action is good it feels quite empty and doesnt seem to go anywhere.  As always Loki gets the best lines, if only there was more of him in the film.  Worth watching if you are a fan of this genre but don’t expect great things.

Runner Runner Review

I think the fact that i have virtually no thoughts at all about this film probably sums it up.  Nothing really happens!  Is it a thriller?  It’s not thrilling! Is it a cool, stylish, sexy Oceans 11 type film?  It is not cool, stylish or sexy! Is it meant to have a twist ending?  It is not twisty!!  Whilst i didn’t feel a great urge to switch this film off, once it finished it felt as though nothing had entertained me.  Timberlake is not a leading man and I have no idea what Affleck was thinking doing this film in the same time period as something as great as Argo. Runner Runner? Duller Duller!

The Call Review

The main question (and issue) that arises from watching this film is why did they decide to give Halle Berry a bush on the head hairstyle?!! Once you get past this (and it is very difficult to do!) this film starts of well with a decent premise. Berry is a 911 operator trying to get a girl rescued who has been abducted.  However as the tension builds the storyline then gets daft and by the end its very, very daft.  Which is a shame as up unitil the last 20 minutes it was going well but the end does ruin the film. Worth a call to the DVD shop but mainly to examine the great hairstyle Berry is fashioning!!

Captain America – The Winter Soldier Review

This is a decent follow up to the equally decent first Captain America.  I enjoyed this film as it had aspects of a “thriller” plus the normal action sequences you would expect from a Marvel superhero film.  Black Widow had more screen time which can only be a good thing but they could have done with out the Falcoln as that looked pretty naff. This is not going to set any new standards for superhero films (say like the Nolan Batman’s did) but it is a fun packed 2 hours and if you like the Avengers (Iron Man, Thor and Co.) then you will like this.  The only issue I have with this film is that it is called The Winter Soldier, but the Winter Soldier is hardly features as the “big bad”!!

Class of 92 Review

If you like football, like Man Utd and are of a certain age then you will really enjoy this.  Fortunately, I fall into this category so I did find this film very interesting and very enjoyable.  Beckham, Giggs, Butt, Scholes and Neville (x2) came across as very decent superstars and role models to future footballers.  Not something non-football fans will find interesting but if you are one then a very decent watch.

Prisoners Review

A dark film that has a great premise but drags that premise out over a far too long movie.  The set up is good and draws you in but it drags in the middle where it needs a bit more pace to hold your attention.  The acting is strong and anyone with children will feel the characters pain.  The main problem with this film is that you see every “twist” coming and that is a disappointment for me. Worth watching but not one that will need, or deserve, repeat viewings.

Truffle Shuffler 2.5/5

This had the opportunity to stand alongside Seven as one of the most haunting thrillers made – one that lingers in the mind long after. But, it just misses out with one too many cliches and a tendency to join the dots too easily for the audience. There is one ‘oh come on…’ moment that is just lazy story telling and from that point it all gets a little too predictable and backs away from the darkness and shadows. If only Jake didn’t have hound-like hearing it could have been so much better! It is still one of the better thrillers around though – and worth blowing your money on.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

If you like this dark mysterious thriller – then you will find our Dead on Time forensic events will give you and your team the rare chance to solve equally dark and complex cases. Whilst other team building events focus on gimmicks and theatrics – we focus on real-life activities and in-depth, challenging scenarios. Some have so much backstory – you can make a weekend or more out of the experience. However, one of the most important lessons we learnt from this film was: do not make it too easy! Our thriller events really will require your team to think critically whilst under pressure – always considering multiple options.

White House Down Review

This is basically Olympus has Fallen but with worse acting, worse plot and worse effects.  Olympus has Fallen was decent, this is not! Every element of cheese is in this film for you to savour, annoying know it all kid, hero dad, hero President, by numbers baddie’s and topped of by some shocking special effects.  I wonder if Jamie Foxx and James Woods knew what they were getting into to agree to be in this film?  Or was the pay day was a big one?  If you want to watch an all American, save the day, save the President film then Olympus is the one.  White House Down, I felt very down having spent 2 hours watching it!

We’re the Millers Review

This feels like the sort of film you would see on a slob-out Sunday afternoon but never will because of the adult quotient of gags and language. There are laugh-out-loud moments, like with the Hang Over films and Bridesmaids. But, as with those films – the laughs are too few and far between. It is not as good as either of the aforementioned comedies and this one has an all too predictable Sunday matinee ending.

The Bigger Boat: 1.5/5

A pretty much by the number’s comedy which passes the time, has a few laughs but doesn’t really set any new levels in comedy terms. Will Poulter gives a funny turn as the simple teenager and Aniston turns it on a stripper with a heart but ultimately it is a easy watch and forgotten just as easily.

Pacific Rim Review

If you like monsters fighting giant robots withloads of cheese and zero plot then this is the film for you! The script is shocking, the effects not great and the acting is beyond poor! But weirdly it was a watchable film.  There is no real plot to speak of and all characters are standard fair but the action is good and if you leave your brian at the door and expect extra cheese then you won’t be disappointed.

Kick Ass 2 Review

This felt like a watered down, slightly hammy version of the original. It doesn’t really develop the story and is not as well scripted or directed – so it doesn’t have the laughs or shocks. All told, if you liked the first – you may well be disappointed. If you haven’t seen the first – go and buy it for three quid instead of renting this.

The Bigger Boat: 2.5/5

Whilst this is not a good as the first, and great, Kick Ass movie it is still a pretty decent sequel.  It is more character driven (if you can say that about a comic book film!) which does add interest especially around Hit Girl.  The big baddie in the film (formally Red Mist) has all the best lines and is very funny as is Jim Carey. The only real disappoinment with the film is that it is much toned down from the first with less graphic fighting and no real shock value which the first one had by the bucket load. Overall a good sequel but could have been better if they went for an 18 certificate and a toned down 15.

The Worlds End Review

I am a big fan of the previous Pegg/Frost combo’s (especially Hot Fuzz andPaul) so I had high hopes for this.  However I am a little disappointed.  Yes there are some funny moments (mainly towards the start of the film) but by the end of the film I found myself  a little bored.  Ultimatly there are to many “leads” which take away from the Frost & Pegg chemistry which is a shame.  Rosamund Pike is not a comic actress and struggles in this film, so much so that you could forget she was in it! Stick with Hot Fuzz as The Worlds End will leave you feeling a little cool.

Rush Review

Being a non-F1 fan I was not sure i would like this film about the Hunt/Lauda battle. However i found myself quite enjoying it.  The films kicks along at a good pace highlighting the differences between the 2 leads.  For those that know the outcome (given this is based on true events) there may be a lack of tension but the racing shots are great and it never fails in holding your attention.  Chris Hemsworth looks like he is having a great time playing the famous ladys man even through he still looks like he is in Thor mode!! Weather you like F1 or not this is still a decent character driven film that will keep you entertained all the way to the finishing line.

The Wolverine Review

I am a fan of the X-Men films but this is the worst of the lot! Yes, even worse than X-Men 3 and Wolverine Origins! For a superhero film, which ultimatly it is, it is very dull, not many mutants (which makes the X-Men films fun) and Hugh Jackman looks bored for most parts of the film.  A feeling I am getting with this character! Hopefully Days of Future Past will be a return to X-Men form as this was very disappointing.

Alan Partridge – Alpha Papa

If you are a fan of the Partridge (which I am) then you will like this film as it is basically an extended episode of one of the programs. And at times it can feel like that. There are some really funny moments in the film and Steve Coogan is great as always as Alan. The storyline is of course a bit daft but that is to be expected. There needed to be more big funny scenes to make this film really good and it certainly doesn’t fit the big screen as well as the Inbetweeners movie seemed to, but if like Alan Partridge then this is worth a watch. 2.5 Nutshells.

After Earth

I can’t remember the last really good film that Will Smith was in? And this is not a really good film!  After Earth is basically Will Smith sat in a crashed space ship pouting whilst his annoying son runs around a forest being annoying.  The effects are shocking and the acting worse. The only good thing is that the film is quite short so it is over pretty quickly!

Seven Psychopaths

I wasn’t a big fan of In Bruges (by the same person) so had my doubts about this, but thankfully my doubts were proven very wrong.  This is very clever and well made – a bit like a film in a film, with Colin Farrell a struggling script writer penning a film with the same title.  Sam Rockwell is his not very helpful mate with a secret and Walken is as always great as another friend along for the ride.  It has some great scenes and is very funny (in a dark way) in places. This has cult classic written all over it.

The name alone is intriguing but it is the ‘story within a story’ technique that sparked our interest. It adds surprise value and complexity – which is why we leapt at the chance to do it when designing our Forensic Thriller events! This film also demonstrates how to get the right balance between humour and darkness. Our team will guide you through dark event with a light, engaging touch. Let us know you liked the ‘mood’ of this film and we will recommend the best version of our thriller event for you.

Pain and Gain

When this landed on the mat – I was disappointed. Whalberg and The Rock – my expectation was low. When I realised it was a Bay film – I nearly didn’t put it in the machine. It would’ve been my loss because this was surprisingly entertaining. The fact the leads play a very dark comedy totally straight is the secret to success in what is a shocking, funny and horrifying story. The fact it is very close to the true events makes it all the better. However, there is so much to fit in that it does sag a little in the middle – unlike the leads! The extras documentary telling the actual story is also worth a watch.

The Bigger Boat: 4/5

Given this is based on a true story makes it quite unbelievable, yet it actually happened! Whilst this film will win no Oscars it is a fun film with laugh out loud moments.  Marky Mark is great as body builder number 1 with the Rock a decent comic foil as his Jesus loving buddy.  It is slightly over long but the 3 main leads keep you interested and knowing it happened makes it more entertaining. Summed up it is big muscled men with a few bikini wearing ladies thrown in attempting to pull of a crime caper, and it is a good, fun ride.

Now You See Me

The trailer for this look great, the actual film therefore disappoints. It is a great premise with a decent cast put I found myself not really caring about the main characters (in fact they actually started annoying me!) and the apparent “twist” ending can be seen a mile away!! Could have been much better if it wasn’t so lazy.

The Truffle Shuffler: 2.5/5

Take Ocean’s 11 but with magicians and you could be on to a winner. Unfortunately, it is all glitz and glamour – and just an illusion of a good film. The whole thing is structured like a magic trick (they must have felt so smart) – with numerous ‘slights of hand’ and improbable reveal upon reveal. At one point I thought I was watching a ‘Carry On’ film it became so daft. Harrelson is the most entertaining – but this is David Copperfield rather than Derren Brown. You simply feel cheated.

If you are a fan of nakedness then there is one out standing scene in this film! Apart from that this is a film that tries to be way too clever and only achieves being very daft. It starts of ok with a decent premise but then it goes to pot and gets silly.

Truffle Shuffler: 2/5

It has a promising start – but gets lost in its own convoluted ideas and presentation. I lost interest about half way through – where the focus switched from story-telling to directorial flair. Unfortunately, the ending is nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is either. Fair to say, the best bits definitely belong to Rosario Dawson.
