Sabotage: Nutshell Review

This a confused film.  It stars Arnie so you would think it would be all action but there is very little action.  Arnie tries  a spot of straight of acting and showing an emotional element to the film, it really doesn’t work. There is a lot of male posturing, talking tough and muscles on show but the film goes nowhere.  The end is very predictable and whilst this isnt the worst Arnie film there has been it is far from one of his best.

Non Stop: Nutshell Review

This is basically Taken on a plane.  Neeson being the action man Neeson whilst on a plane.  It is not awful but it is far from great.  The format of the film is annoying with the texts on screen and Moore is very much wasted as the passenger side kick.  There are some decent set pieces but the main problem with the film is that you know who the baddie of the film is the minute he walks on screen even through it is meant to be a twist! Watch Taken instead if you need a Neeson fix.

Trespass: Nutshell Review

There is no way to describe this film other than shockingly awful! What Kidman was thinking by agreeing to star in this is beyond me.  The plot is a nonsense and gets worse as the film goes on and the acting is just as bad.  This is basically Panic Room but worse.  Nick Cage looks like he knows he is in a bad film and just wants it to end, which were my thoughts after about 10 minutes! There are no other words to add apart from don’t waste your viewing time on this.

Hansel & Gretal Witch Hunters: Nutshell Review

This film is 88 minutes long which means that whilst it is a cheese-fest with bad lines and 80’s style acting, it nips along at pace and keeps you entertained. It is certainley not a “good” film but if you take it for what it is then it is an easy, switch-the-brain-off film. Neither main lead seems to take it too seriously but given the script it would be very hard to do so.  There will be no further sequels I am sure, and that is a good thing.  But worth a watch for a laugh.

Escape Plan: Nutshell Review

It’s Sly and Arnie together in a film so you know just what you are going to get.  So, with that in mind the expectations have to be fairly low.  On the whole (with low expectations) the film is ok, old man banter between the 2 leads, a few fights, a fair bit of wooden acting and lots of hardened crim’s doing hard time. It’s amusing that Sly is meant to play an ex-lawyer turned prison escape expert, certainly a stretch of the imagination.  The main disappointment with this film (and it is in everything that he is in) is that Vinnie Jones has a large role.  Why anyone thinks he is a good actor (?!) to have in a film is beyond me, he makes Sly and Arnie (and virtually anyone on the planet) look like Oscar winning lead actors!

Noah Review

I am not a religious person and dont know a huge amount the bible so one positive about this film is that I learnt something. That is about the only positive.  For a big “epic” film some of the effects are really poor and some of the acting even poorer. The film is not what I would class as dull but the actors seem bored to be in it. We all know the story, in some way, but it seems to be very dragged out even though it is not especially long, it just feels a bit like that. Crowe supports some ever changing hair styles throughout the film which is amusing (not sure it is meant to be!?) and I cheered when the Winstone met his end as he was truly awful.

Truffle Shuffler: 1/5

Strangely, if you like Lord of the Rings – you may actually like this retelling of the Biblical classic but you need to be able to approach it as nothing more than a grand olde story. Sure, there are morals, judgements and sins floating throughout – just ready for you to hang on to should you wish – but no more so than in the Hobbit or the like. If you can tolerate some dodgy CGI effects (harking back to Heston’s Moses), ignore the Winstone and accept Hopkins doing his usual – it is nowhere near as bad as it has been made out. Perhaps you need to approach it expecting the end of the world to have a half decent time. I imagine it will be rolled out time and time again on Sunday TV – so wait for it then.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit Review

I didn’t have massive high hopes for this film but hoped it would be a bit different to the norm.  It isn’t. It is not awful but there is nothing new here.  Chris Pine is much better as a young Kirk than he is as a young Ryan and Ken’s villian of the film is a throwback to he 80’s. It is very predictable and whilst I didn’t feel a huge surge to switch it off it is certainly forgetable once viewed. Baldwin, Ford & even Affleck were stronger on the role so watch one of those instead if you fancy a Jack Ryan flick.

Lone Survivor Review

This is based on a true story and during the film you really sense the emotion that these guy’s must have been feeling.  It is a well acted film by all 4 leads and it pops along at pace but it is not an all out action film. Some of the shots, especially when they are falling over a cliff, are breath taking and you feel every bump and bruise. There are some flaws in the film, Eric Bana is wasted as the man in charge and you don’t really get to know the main charaters in terms of their personalities but the rest of the positives make up for that. Wait till the end credits as it really add’s to the emotion of the film and very much brings it to life.

This is without doubt the worst film I have ever watched! It is dull from the start, literally nothing happens, much of it is in silence and grey and drab (because it is set in Scotland!). Scarlett takes her clothes off which for many may be a selling point of the film but by the time that happens you really won’t care and just want to be put out of the misery of watching such a dull, dull film.  Yes there is a message there (Scarlett is an alien in a human body and she starts to feel and undertand human emotions which changes her) but I really didn’t care and just wanted it to end!

Gaurdians of the Galaxy Review

Whilst this is part of the Marvel Cinamatic Universe it feels very different. Not better or worse, just different. It is more of a sci-fi romp than a superhero movie but it is a great sci-fi romp. The film centres on a group of mis-matched “hero’s” each with great casting and no one feels like a side-kick. There is great humour through out and some brilliant throw away lines. Chris Platt is great as the leader Star Lord and there are sequals to be had here without doubt. It feels very fresh compared to Iron Man, Thor, Capt America and chums (which are all great films) which means Marvel can keep expanding their Universe. The only down of the movie was the pretty weak main “baddie” who didn’t do much and (with out spoiling the end) got finished off fairly easiliy. But without doubt this is a fun packed, action fuelled success and I hope there is a sequal to build on this first film.

47 Ronin Review

With Neo Reaves being the king of wooden acting this film role is ideal for him.  Reaves play a “halfling” in this mystical romp which boils down to a good old revnge story.  It is entertaining enough with some decent set pieces but don’t watch it for the acting or plot twists as you will be disappointed. It will help bring Japenese film to the fore and there are some good points to the film such as the settings, the directors take on the action is good and well done but it is nothing new or different.

The Wolf of Wall Street Review

This a great, roller coaster of a film.  Think Wall Street on speed.  Given this is based on a true story makes it even better.  Leo is great as the lead man but it is Jonah Hill who steals the film as his side kick and partner in their dodgy dealings.  This is not a film you would watch with your Mum as there is lot of naked ladies on show (so your Dad might like it!) but the whole film is a lesson of extremes that lead to almighty lows.  I found the running time slightly long, but that is one of the trade marks of Marty’s films, but there are only a couple of moments where the film drags, most of the time it kicks along at great speed and with great fun. Top film and one i want to watch again.

2 Guns Review

I enjoyed this film as you get what it says on the tin. It is a typical action romp, goodies versus baddies! Walberg and Washington have good banter and chemistry and the film kicks along at a good pace throughout. You can see the ending coming a mile away but as long as you fancy an easy to watch no brainer then you will be happy. Plus, there is a great supporting role by Bill Paxton and a film with the Paxton in is always worth a watch.

X-Men: Days of Future Past Review

At the end of the day this is an X-Men film which means those that like X-Men will like this those that don’t wont watch it.  It is a superior X-Men film and a great mix of the new and old characters.  It moves on from First Class and makes the Last Stand pretty pointless (having Vinne Jones in it really sealed its quality!) but it nicely ties up the previous films to the new ones.  The action is great and some good humour in there also. The are some big plot holes but if you get past that and sit back it is a great X-Men film and will keep you entertained all the way through.

Dom Hemmingway Review

This film is a masterclass by Jude Law in over-acting as the man man Dom. Whilst this is not the worst film I have ever seen it is certainly not great.  There are some funny lines in there but overal it is a lot of swearing, running around and shouting.  Jude Law is mis-cast as Dom and Richard E Grant is even worse as his sidekick. The second half of the film I spent trying to figure out what Dom’s on screen daughter has been in (that should tell you how gripped I was with Jude’s acting), turns out she is The Mother of Dragons!

End of Watch Review

I recently watched this film for a 2nd time and whilst I enjoyed it the first time it gets even better on 2nd viewing.  This is an intense ride of action, banter, emotions and strong characters and it is great.  It is not for those who are easily offended as there is a lot of strong language and it cracks along at great pace but not at the expense of building character arcs. Much of it is handy-cam and this add’s to the excitment of the movie.  There are a couple of flaw’s such as it is meant to be a docu-style film, filmed on their cameras but that goes out of the window after the first quarter of the film. But, if you ignore that – it is an excellent, exciting, action packed, swearing filled, buddy movie.

The Lone Ranger Review

This has Sunday afternoon film being watched at home whilst it rains outside written all over it.  It is a long film with not much happening.  There are some amusing scenes but these are few and far between.  Dep is under used as Tonto and the film is worse for it.  With a tighter run time this could be better but it drags in the middle and I found myself getting bored and wanting it to finish. It’s no Pirates (both Disney films) and I can’t see this being the start of a new franchise.

Gravity Review

I did not expect this to live up to the hype – but I cannot help but rave about it! This is one of the rare films that should be seen on the biggest screen as possible – the visuals are fantastic, both the effects and ultra close-up filming. That doesn’t mean I’m sold on 3D anymore than normal – in my opinion a floating pen, a teardrop and shrapnel fragments do not warrant the discomfort of the glasses and the lighter wallet – but see it in IMAX anyway for the sheer scope. The film itself is perfectly paced – making this an awesome experience rather than an outsider observation. It achieves real tension and excitement. This is ninety minutes on a theme park ride – and you will want to jump right back into it if you can. Warning – it will be significantly lost on a small screen – so shell out now!

The Bigger Boat:  4.5/5

This film is very worthy of all the awards that came it’s way.  It is a great looking film, very well acted my Clooney and Bullock and it builds the tension very well. You have to be a fan of Sandra though to really love this film as for 75% of it she is the only person on screen.  My issue is that I am not a big fan of the Bullock. She does a great job of holding the “will she make it” tension and all the way through the effects are great right up to the end. Not sure I would rush to watch it again but it is certainly an enjoyable 90 minutes.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 Review

This film is great or slightly disappointing depending on your point of view with regards to what a superhero film should deliver? This film offers a deep love story between Parker and Stacey which spans the duration of the film but reduces the action and for me that is not what I want from a Spiderman film.  There is a decent back story in regards to Peter’s parents and an introduction to the Green Goblin. So if you like a back story and a love story intersected with some action scences then you will love this.  For me I prefer more comic book action and excitement in a superhero film so I was slightly disappointed.

Hunger Games – Catching Fire Review

Whilst this is very similiar to the first film I actually found it more entertaining and more enjoyable.  There is more character driven storylines and whilst there maybe not as much action in the actual hunger game section it is more interesting to watch through the characters journey.  The main issues with this film, as with many second films of 3, is that it does very much feel like a lead up to the 3rd and final film and ends as such.  But the same can be said for LOTR, The Hobbit etc.  If you get passed that it is a very decent middle film with a good story arc and a more detailed character driven approach.
