Saving Mr Banks: Nutshell Review

Admittedly, it was under mild protest with more than a spoonful of sugar needed to make me watch this. The subject matter just didn’t grab me – but it turns out my BIG bag of chocolates wasn’t even half finished because I found myself engrossed in a Disney story! The background to Mary Poppins arriving on the big screen is intriguingly told (if heavily modified) – and both Hanks and Thompson are terrific sparring partners in a movie that explores multiple themes and real life issues. As if by magic, this has become one of the better movies I have seen for some time – fitting alongside the likes of Good Will Hunting and The Dead Poets Society in terms of ‘feel’.

Gaurdians of the Galaxy Review

Whilst this is part of the Marvel Cinamatic Universe it feels very different. Not better or worse, just different. It is more of a sci-fi romp than a superhero movie but it is a great sci-fi romp. The film centres on a group of mis-matched “hero’s” each with great casting and no one feels like a side-kick. There is great humour through out and some brilliant throw away lines. Chris Platt is great as the leader Star Lord and there are sequals to be had here without doubt. It feels very fresh compared to Iron Man, Thor, Capt America and chums (which are all great films) which means Marvel can keep expanding their Universe. The only down of the movie was the pretty weak main “baddie” who didn’t do much and (with out spoiling the end) got finished off fairly easiliy. But without doubt this is a fun packed, action fuelled success and I hope there is a sequal to build on this first film.

The Wolf of Wall Street Review

This a great, roller coaster of a film.  Think Wall Street on speed.  Given this is based on a true story makes it even better.  Leo is great as the lead man but it is Jonah Hill who steals the film as his side kick and partner in their dodgy dealings.  This is not a film you would watch with your Mum as there is lot of naked ladies on show (so your Dad might like it!) but the whole film is a lesson of extremes that lead to almighty lows.  I found the running time slightly long, but that is one of the trade marks of Marty’s films, but there are only a couple of moments where the film drags, most of the time it kicks along at great speed and with great fun. Top film and one i want to watch again.

Edge Of Tomorrow Nutshell Review

I was totally surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. Source Code and Groundhog Day – both of which this film takes some inspiration from – became a touch tedious. It’s not the case with this smartly paced story. It’s clever enough to give you the ‘de ja vu’ feeling and revel in the frustrations of the lead character but it manages to progress the story and characters enough to keep you engrossed. It has a ‘playful’ feel about it – throwing in unexpected twists and thrills – whilst including great action and a surprising amount of laughs.

End of Watch Review

I recently watched this film for a 2nd time and whilst I enjoyed it the first time it gets even better on 2nd viewing.  This is an intense ride of action, banter, emotions and strong characters and it is great.  It is not for those who are easily offended as there is a lot of strong language and it cracks along at great pace but not at the expense of building character arcs. Much of it is handy-cam and this add’s to the excitment of the movie.  There are a couple of flaw’s such as it is meant to be a docu-style film, filmed on their cameras but that goes out of the window after the first quarter of the film. But, if you ignore that – it is an excellent, exciting, action packed, swearing filled, buddy movie.

Side Effects

It is best to see this film with as little background knowledge about it as possible. Suffice it to say, this is very cleverly named, written and directed – encompassing a range of themes and multiple genres. At its core it is about manipulation, trust and the fighting spirit. If you want to give your grey cells a workout it could be for you. It is well worth a second viewing too – as your perspective changes throughout. It is slow burning and very much character driven so you need to be patient – to allow it to unravel itself toward a great payoff.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

This taught, twisting thriller had us second guessing all the way – and still managed to offer surprises. We have multiple stories of varying complexity available in our Mystery Thriller range – and we like to think (based on evaluations by participants) that we deliver the same journey and experience as taken in this film. If you like a true challenge – you should play one of our Dead on Time Forensic Thriller events and talk to us about the difficulty level you would like to put your teams through! They range from moderate to mind-bendingly complex.

Seven Psychopaths

I wasn’t a big fan of In Bruges (by the same person) so had my doubts about this, but thankfully my doubts were proven very wrong.  This is very clever and well made – a bit like a film in a film, with Colin Farrell a struggling script writer penning a film with the same title.  Sam Rockwell is his not very helpful mate with a secret and Walken is as always great as another friend along for the ride.  It has some great scenes and is very funny (in a dark way) in places. This has cult classic written all over it.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

The name alone is intriguing but it is the ‘story within a story’ technique that sparked our interest. It adds surprise value and complexity – which is why we leapt at the chance to do it when designing our Forensic Thriller events! This film also demonstrates how to get the right balance between humour and darkness. Our team will guide you through dark event with a light, engaging touch. Let us know you liked the ‘mood’ of this film and we will recommend the best version of our thriller event for you.

Django Unchained

A ‘western’ like you have never seen before – with a brilliantly balanced dialogue – story – action – humour mix that Tarrantino does so well when on form. Better than Inglorious Basterds and truly entertaining to watch – even for non-western fans because it has so many elements to it.  It nearly has it all – it’s dark edge tinged with some genuine laugh out loud moments.  It’s just a little overlong – but is still wonderful (if very violent) fun!

The Bigger Boat: 4.5/5

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

So, we do not have a western themed team building event – but take inspiration from the structure and mechanics of this well told and engaging story. We also found the rather unconventional use of music particularly effective here – and adopt the same theory in all of our events. It’s why you will find a range of background music in all of team building days. It is induces the mood – quickening the heart beat or calming you down. If you liked this movie – you find influences in all of our corporate events – Target: Mars, Bunkered and Dead on Time.

World War Z

Great film (the extended cut on blu-ray adds a bit more zombie action which is good) and great fun to watch.  It is not a typical zombie movie, more of an action movie with a zombie theme. Brad Pitt is decent as the main lead (not sure he needs to have long hair though?!) and the film moves along at a good pace. The set pieces (especially the zombies climbing the wall) are good and well done. The one thing that lets it down is the ending which seems to be setting it up for a sequal, that i doubt will happen.

The Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

A much smarter approach to a Zombie film than expected – mixed with genuinely exciting action.  The hugely effective structure moves you from one stunning set piece to another – with enough of a break between to develop the story and give you time to take it all in.  The pacing is spot on.  It is a very well shaken cocktail of 28 Days Later and Contagion – a ‘real-life’ approach – where Z’s spread like a virus.  As long as you accept Pitt is the luckiest man on the planet – this is a film you may want to watch again and again. (The Blu-Ray release includes an extra 8 minutes – mainly extending the gore and horror of scenes chopped for lower certification at the cinema. It does improve the film by making it seem more complete.)

 The Bigger Boat: 4/5

Nutshell Score:

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

The end of the world scenario has been played out many times – but this film got the pacing and set pieces spot on. If you watched it and wondered if how you would respond and fancy an opportunity to put yourself and your colleagues to the test – we aimed for the same structure, intensity and challenge level in our Bunkered event. It requires a careful mix of strategic planning, instant problem solving and risk taking to succeed. Something so well demonstrated by the somewhat overly lucky Pitt in this movie. Unfortunately, there is no luck in our team building day – just skill and judgement.

Gravity

I did not expect this to live up to the hype – but I cannot help but rave about it! This is one of the rare films that should be seen on the biggest screen as possible – the visuals are fantastic, both the effects and ultra close-up filming. That doesn’t mean I’m sold on 3D anymore than normal – in my opinion a floating pen, a teardrop and shrapnel fragments do not warrant the discomfort of the glasses and the lighter wallet – but see it in IMAX anyway for the sheer scope. The film itself is perfectly paced – making this an awesome experience rather than an outsider observation. It achieves real tension and excitement. This is ninety minutes on a theme park ride – and you will want to jump right back into it if you can. Warning – it will be significantly lost on a small screen – so shell out now!

The Bigger Boat:  4.5/5

Nutshell Score:

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

This is a master class in maintaining and building tension. The story is simple – but expertly told. It clearly demonstrates the importance of music and sound in this process (winning Oscars in these categories). But, most essentially – it focusses on our ability to problem solve in order to survive against the odds. If you like this film – you would find our Target:Mars and Bunkered team building days particularly effective. You will need to be able to move from one problematic situation to another if you are to make it through successfully – undaunted by the risk taking required to win!

Argo

Even though you know how this film is going to end it is still really good, grips you to the end and is filled with tension. Ben Affleck (the new Batman!!!) is decent as the main man and it is a film worthy of all it’s awards.

Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

Whether you know the outcome of this real-life story or not – the film is acted, directed and edited brilliantly enough to grab your attention and intensify until you are perched on the edge of your seat. I was actually ‘clenching’ at points and it was all due to the power of the story-telling – which doesn’t rely on trickery so commonly seen in movies of this kind. Very entertaining.

The Bigger Boat: 4/5

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

It is the power of the story telling and the engagement with the characters that impressed us. Imaginative, out-of-the-box problem solving is effectively demonstrated. If you liked the feel of this film you would particularly like our Bunkered team building day – as it requires the highest levels of strategic thinking of all – together with the ability to put your ideas into action when time is short. When it comes to the crunch – panic is not an option!
