Saving Mr Banks: Nutshell Review

Admittedly, it was under mild protest with more than a spoonful of sugar needed to make me watch this. The subject matter just didn’t grab me – but it turns out my BIG bag of chocolates wasn’t even half finished because I found myself engrossed in a Disney story! The background to Mary Poppins arriving on the big screen is intriguingly told (if heavily modified) – and both Hanks and Thompson are terrific sparring partners in a movie that explores multiple themes and real life issues. As if by magic, this has become one of the better movies I have seen for some time – fitting alongside the likes of Good Will Hunting and The Dead Poets Society in terms of ‘feel’.

Sabotage: Nutshell Review

This a confused film.  It stars Arnie so you would think it would be all action but there is very little action.  Arnie tries  a spot of straight of acting and showing an emotional element to the film, it really doesn’t work. There is a lot of male posturing, talking tough and muscles on show but the film goes nowhere.  The end is very predictable and whilst this isnt the worst Arnie film there has been it is far from one of his best.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 Review

This film is great or slightly disappointing depending on your point of view with regards to what a superhero film should deliver? This film offers a deep love story between Parker and Stacey which spans the duration of the film but reduces the action and for me that is not what I want from a Spiderman film.  There is a decent back story in regards to Peter’s parents and an introduction to the Green Goblin. So if you like a back story and a love story intersected with some action scences then you will love this.  For me I prefer more comic book action and excitement in a superhero film so I was slightly disappointed.

Side Effects

It is best to see this film with as little background knowledge about it as possible. Suffice it to say, this is very cleverly named, written and directed – encompassing a range of themes and multiple genres. At its core it is about manipulation, trust and the fighting spirit. If you want to give your grey cells a workout it could be for you. It is well worth a second viewing too – as your perspective changes throughout. It is slow burning and very much character driven so you need to be patient – to allow it to unravel itself toward a great payoff.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

This taught, twisting thriller had us second guessing all the way – and still managed to offer surprises. We have multiple stories of varying complexity available in our Mystery Thriller range – and we like to think (based on evaluations by participants) that we deliver the same journey and experience as taken in this film. If you like a true challenge – you should play one of our Dead on Time Forensic Thriller events and talk to us about the difficulty level you would like to put your teams through! They range from moderate to mind-bendingly complex.

Safe Haven

This is remarkable. Something I thought impossible happened… a film with more of a twist ending than the Usual Suspects is the first film to score ZERO nutshells! It may be that my fight to avoid throwing myself out of the window distracted me enough to not see it coming – because this is simply awful. Outrageously clichéd – in every imaginable way. It may be perversely tempting to endure this to experience the end – but, quite simply – you need to resist that temptation. Save yourself! There was some beautiful cinematography – but not enough to counterbalance the misery.

Seven Psychopaths

I wasn’t a big fan of In Bruges (by the same person) so had my doubts about this, but thankfully my doubts were proven very wrong.  This is very clever and well made – a bit like a film in a film, with Colin Farrell a struggling script writer penning a film with the same title.  Sam Rockwell is his not very helpful mate with a secret and Walken is as always great as another friend along for the ride.  It has some great scenes and is very funny (in a dark way) in places. This has cult classic written all over it.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

The name alone is intriguing but it is the ‘story within a story’ technique that sparked our interest. It adds surprise value and complexity – which is why we leapt at the chance to do it when designing our Forensic Thriller events! This film also demonstrates how to get the right balance between humour and darkness. Our team will guide you through dark event with a light, engaging touch. Let us know you liked the ‘mood’ of this film and we will recommend the best version of our thriller event for you.

Star Trek Into Darkness

A big challenge to match the first Star Trek reboot but on the whole they manage it. Great action, decent villain and I personally think Simon Pegg is great as the main comedy relief. Bring on the 3rd instalment of this so far very good franchise.

Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

It starts off at a frantic pace – and maintains it nearly all the way through – but at the expense your involvement and much of the ‘feel good’ humour of JJ’s first Star Trek.  It feels much more of a ‘Star Trek’ movie – but, ironically, that may not be a good thing.  It does entwine themes and characters from the original series and films in interesting ways and is entertaining.  It’s just not as good.
