Non Stop: Nutshell Review

This is basically Taken on a plane.  Neeson being the action man Neeson whilst on a plane.  It is not awful but it is far from great.  The format of the film is annoying with the texts on screen and Moore is very much wasted as the passenger side kick.  There are some decent set pieces but the main problem with the film is that you know who the baddie of the film is the minute he walks on screen even through it is meant to be a twist! Watch Taken instead if you need a Neeson fix.

Noah Review

I am not a religious person and dont know a huge amount the bible so one positive about this film is that I learnt something. That is about the only positive.  For a big “epic” film some of the effects are really poor and some of the acting even poorer. The film is not what I would class as dull but the actors seem bored to be in it. We all know the story, in some way, but it seems to be very dragged out even though it is not especially long, it just feels a bit like that. Crowe supports some ever changing hair styles throughout the film which is amusing (not sure it is meant to be!?) and I cheered when the Winstone met his end as he was truly awful.

Truffle Shuffler: 1/5

Strangely, if you like Lord of the Rings – you may actually like this retelling of the Biblical classic but you need to be able to approach it as nothing more than a grand olde story. Sure, there are morals, judgements and sins floating throughout – just ready for you to hang on to should you wish – but no more so than in the Hobbit or the like. If you can tolerate some dodgy CGI effects (harking back to Heston’s Moses), ignore the Winstone and accept Hopkins doing his usual – it is nowhere near as bad as it has been made out. Perhaps you need to approach it expecting the end of the world to have a half decent time. I imagine it will be rolled out time and time again on Sunday TV – so wait for it then.

Now You See Me

The trailer for this look great, the actual film therefore disappoints. It is a great premise with a decent cast put I found myself not really caring about the main characters (in fact they actually started annoying me!) and the apparent “twist” ending can be seen a mile away!! Could have been much better if it wasn’t so lazy.

The Truffle Shuffler: 2.5/5

Take Ocean’s 11 but with magicians and you could be on to a winner. Unfortunately, it is all glitz and glamour – and just an illusion of a good film. The whole thing is structured like a magic trick (they must have felt so smart) – with numerous ‘slights of hand’ and improbable reveal upon reveal. At one point I thought I was watching a ‘Carry On’ film it became so daft. Harrelson is the most entertaining – but this is David Copperfield rather than Derren Brown. You simply feel cheated.

Man of Steel

This is definitely not a kid’s film – it’s the Nolan take on the Superman story.  It’s an interesting approach – focussing on ‘Superman’ as an alien – and the threat of alien invasion.  They have cleverly combined the favourite elements of Reeve’s Superman 1 & 2 – an origin story and the only worthy adversary (Zod) – into a much darker story.  The core concept is excellent but, it is too slow to start.  Then is switches up to mayhem mode – but what can you do when the hero and ‘baddies’ are indestructible? (the problem with Superman in any guise).  In this one, it means a lot of buildings are destroyed – over and over again until a rather primitive solution occurs to the victor – which seems to indicate Kryptonians do not have the ‘super-smarts’.  Overall, it is the best Superman film – but not as good as Nolan’s Batman series.

The Bigger Boat: 3/5

Mud

Think: ‘Stand By Me’ with a hint of film noir – but delivered at a painfully slow ‘Southern drawl’.  It is too drawn out – but it is also beautifully filmed and has decent performances throughout.  There are lots of reasons this film should be good – but unfortunately, it is a fine example of the whole not adding up to the sum of its (good) parts.
