About Time: Nutshell Film Review

The idea of time travel is always an engaging hook (obviously for McAdams) – but as in ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’ do not expect any sci-fi theories or explanations. As long as you are willing to accept these men have a ‘super-power’ to jump time – you can enjoy the core themes of a film that really explores human nature, values and frailties. It has the same feel as Love Actually and The Boat That Rocked – so it is heart-warming and humorous. Unfortunately, its charm does not last for what seems an eternal run time – so when the credits rolled I was definitely thinking – ‘it’s about time!’

Captain America – The Winter Soldier Review

This is a decent follow up to the equally decent first Captain America.  I enjoyed this film as it had aspects of a “thriller” plus the normal action sequences you would expect from a Marvel superhero film.  Black Widow had more screen time which can only be a good thing but they could have done with out the Falcoln as that looked pretty naff. This is not going to set any new standards for superhero films (say like the Nolan Batman’s did) but it is a fun packed 2 hours and if you like the Avengers (Iron Man, Thor and Co.) then you will like this.  The only issue I have with this film is that it is called The Winter Soldier, but the Winter Soldier is hardly features as the “big bad”!!

Class of 92 Review

If you like football, like Man Utd and are of a certain age then you will really enjoy this.  Fortunately, I fall into this category so I did find this film very interesting and very enjoyable.  Beckham, Giggs, Butt, Scholes and Neville (x2) came across as very decent superstars and role models to future footballers.  Not something non-football fans will find interesting but if you are one then a very decent watch.

Captain Phillips Review

An interesting and mostly realistic reconstruction of a real-life event – rather than an all-out-excitement high seas drama. It is filmed with the ‘trademark’ Greengrass frenetic camerawork – which works especially well in the ship locations but is a nightmare for those who suffer motion sickness! There is tension, good acting and even tentative links to wider issues – but it seemed to sink a little before the conclusion and I found my interest floating away. Worth watching – but probably not buying.

American Hustle Review

I must have missed something, be dumber than I thought or watched a different film to those hyping this as greatness. It is not much above average. The acting is all good but the story is not as smart as it thinks it is and it tends to drag. The introductory scene – Batman getting ready having seriously let himself go (the chameleon Bale) – recreates the painstaking effort to make the best of a limited hand.  Like the film – it is intriguing but slow. It accurately sums up what is to come for the next 50 hours (at least it felt that long at times). Lawrence gives a standout performance – in a womanly guise without a bow!

Alan Partridge – Alpha Papa

If you are a fan of the Partridge (which I am) then you will like this film as it is basically an extended episode of one of the programs. And at times it can feel like that. There are some really funny moments in the film and Steve Coogan is great as always as Alan. The storyline is of course a bit daft but that is to be expected. There needed to be more big funny scenes to make this film really good and it certainly doesn’t fit the big screen as well as the Inbetweeners movie seemed to, but if like Alan Partridge then this is worth a watch. 2.5 Nutshells.

After Earth

I can’t remember the last really good film that Will Smith was in? And this is not a really good film!  After Earth is basically Will Smith sat in a crashed space ship pouting whilst his annoying son runs around a forest being annoying.  The effects are shocking and the acting worse. The only good thing is that the film is quite short so it is over pretty quickly!

Cloud Atlas

There is grandeur here – an attempt at huge sweeping themes, monumental orchestral scores and ground breaking prosthetics – but it just doesn’t make the impact it strives to and loses its multitude of ‘messages’ in the jumble.  Essentially, six mini stories blended together within a time-shifting theme.  The problem is, no single story is particularly strong and if it wasn’t for the complex structure of the film – the weaknesses would be too quickly apparent.  I couldn’t help but focus on guessing the actor – but that wasn’t much of a challenge either!

Argo

Even though you know how this film is going to end it is still really good, grips you to the end and is filled with tension. Ben Affleck (the new Batman!!!) is decent as the main man and it is a film worthy of all it’s awards.

Truffle Shuffler: 4/5

Whether you know the outcome of this real-life story or not – the film is acted, directed and edited brilliantly enough to grab your attention and intensify until you are perched on the edge of your seat. I was actually ‘clenching’ at points and it was all due to the power of the story-telling – which doesn’t rely on trickery so commonly seen in movies of this kind. Very entertaining.

Ideas for Team Building Activities:

It is the power of the story telling and the engagement with the characters that impressed us. Imaginative, out-of-the-box problem solving is effectively demonstrated. If you liked the feel of this film you would particularly like our Bunkered team building day – as it requires the highest levels of strategic thinking of all – together with the ability to put your ideas into action when time is short. When it comes to the crunch – panic is not an option!
